The Coppers is an exciting, revealing book by Wayne Morgan, a veteran of the Columbus Police Department who served in the unique period he calls "the era of The Coppers": the time between the end of Prohibition and the beginning of Miranda.

It was a time when foot patrol was still common, when beat cops were often on their own, out of touch with Headquarters because practical, hand-held two-way radios were not yet available; a time when citizens pitched in and assisted the police; a time when women officers were always officially assigned to the "juvenile bureau," no matter what their actual assignments were.

It was also a time of camaraderie and high spirits.

In The Coppers, you'll meet the following people:

Madeleine Baker, the first officially recognized woman homicide detective in the United States, whose courage and indomitable attitude won over her male colleagues.
Roy Morgan, the tough, good-natured, and beloved veteran cop (and father of the author), who, in the early fifties, hosted a "Cops"-type TV show!
Daniels and West, the thugs who went on a savage murder spree in central and northern Ohio in 1948.
John McPeak, Morgan's best friend and partner in crime-fighting.
Jack Montag, police photographer and a tough Copper in his own right.
Bobo Smith, a high-school friend who Morgan convinced to become a detective, and who went on to solve one of the most notorious murders in Columbus' history.
